Q:
My computer has a wireless internet card; can I receive
IntelliWave internet service?
A: Yes, you can if you are located in
one of our many Multi-tenant locations such as Milliron
Apartments or River’s Edge. Call IntelliWave to
see if you are in a Multi-tenant location.
Q: I don’t live in a Multi-tenant location.
Is there another way to get IntelliWave internet service?
A: Yes! You may still be a candidate
for IntelliWave’s residential, fixed-wireless service.
To be eligible you must be within range of one of our
base-stations located around the county. A signal-test
technician will perform a free evaluation of service availability
before installation. Call IntelliWave for details.
Q:
Where is your service available?
A: Our service areas are located throughout
Athens County, Ohio. We currently provide high-speed wireless
service to much of:
- Athens
- Downtown Nelsonville
- Albany
- The Plains
- Waverly
- Piketon
Q: How does your system work?
A: We provide internet to our customers in one
of two ways:
- Our Multi-tenant locations are equipped with commercial-grade
wi-fi access points. This enables customers in the area
to receive service immediately, without waiting for an
installation. This is an affordable internet option, ideal
for students, because customers need only inexpensive,
off-the-shelf wireless cards to connect.
- Our residential system utilizes proprietary 900MHz wireless
point-to-multipoint technology. Upon completion of a signal
test, IntelliWave technicians will install a small modem
at your home. This modem is similar in size and shape
to a cable or DSL modem. Attached to the modem is an antenna,
which receives a 900MHz signal from one of our base-stations.
The modem converts this secure, encrypted 900MHz signal
to a high-speed internet connection via Ethernet that
can be linked directly to one or more computers.
Q:
I have more than one computer at home; does your residential
service work with multiple computers?
A: Yes, simply attach a broadband router to the
modem and you can link as many computers as you want to
your IntelliWave connection. If you have a wireless-enabled
laptop computer, consider purchasing a wireless broadband
router. With this device you can still connect non-wireless
computers via Ethernet, while enjoying the freedom of
wireless on your wi-fi computers. IntelliWave customer
support technicians can help you plan and assemble your
home network.
Q:
Is your service compatible with Apple or Linux computers?
A: Yes.
Q:
Does this service use my phone line, TV cable, or satellite
dish?
A: No. You don’t need any of those to receive
intelliwave internet. You just need to be within one of
our service areas.
Q:
How fast is IntelliWave’s internet connection?
A: IntelliWave offers a broadband connection
to all its users. The speed of this connection is comparable
to that of a cable or DSL connection. Your geographic
location generally does not affect your connection, providing
one exists.
Q: Do you provide email service?
A: Every customer account may utilize up to 5
separate email addresses at no charge. Our email system
is compatible with all clients and features webmail for
easy access on the go.
Q: Where will the antenna for my modem be located?
A: Most of the time the antenna is mounted on
an inside wall of your home near the modem, this is referred
to as an internal installation. In cases of abnormal or
weak signal quality, an external installation may be necessary.
An external installation may be as simple as mounting
an antenna on an outer wall of the house. Some externals
require a mast and a high-gain antenna mounted on the
rooftop. Because of the time and material investment,
external installations include an additional fee. During
a signal test, our technicians determine the type of installation
necessary. We will inform you of the type of installation
required and the cost before scheduling an installation.
Q: Is your service affected by weather?
A: Our system is virtually weather-proof. However,
ice formation on some external antennas can cause temporary
problems.
Q: Does anything interfere with your system?
A: Cordless phones and other wireless devices
that operate in the 900MHz spectrum can cause temporary
loss of connection. Because our equipment is so sensitive,
we recommend not using these devices anywhere near the
modem or antenna.
